FILM CREDITS
CHALLENGE:
For this project I had to design film credits for a fictitious film of our choice, focusing primarily on different typography in motion treatments and less on movement in the film itself. I chose to work with this project because I loved working in Adobe After Affects for some of our other projects and wanted to explore working in motion more in depth.
SOLUTION:
"BEWILDERED" is a gripping mystery-drama film produced by AMBER BLACK (yours truly). The introduction sets the tone with a simple sans serif font, gradually revealing the producer's name amidst swirling red and black imagery. As the title scene emerges, a dark figure hints at the intrigue to come. The film unfolds with scenes of eerie beauty, such as a feminine figure floating in red-tinted water, symbolizing themes of fire and mortality. Through carefully crafted compositions, the cast is introduced in a stylized manner, with names appearing and disappearing in a hierarchical fashion. As the story progresses, the tension builds, highlighted by a skull holding a rose against a textured backdrop, introducing more key actors. The typography dances across the screen, mirroring the complexity of the narrative. In the final sequence, a silhouette emerges from the woods, gradually revealing the director's name, Scott Mason, amidst flickering flames. The film culminates in a mesmerizing fire scene, perfectly synchronized with the mysterious and dramatic music, leaving viewers captivated until the very end.
THE BREAKDOWN:
-For the intro, I started with a simple sans serif font in small type size at the bottom, "an AMBERBLACK production", on a black background.
- I used an effect that hid my name in white and red on black in pieces before it all slid together from either side to reveal my full name as an image of a girl in black, red, and orange liquid fades into view and my full name, AMBER BLACK, snaps together in white, and the image of the girl fades in from behind and repeats to the right, and the name fades away just as the entire scene starts to spin around in a swirl of red and black to reveal the title scene with a dark figure where the word PRESENTS fades in and the circle quickly spins further and further out to reveal the full scene of the figure.
-The scene with the figure and the title of the film in all upper-case sans serif font, "BEWILDERED" comes in, with the letters appearing randomly one at a time. and the scene twists into a spiral and transitions into a silhouette of a person standing on top of stairs framed by foliage, adding to the mystery. This scene fades to black to emphasize the title which is treated with a video of a fire within the letters to imply that there is a fire scene within the movie.
-The next scene is of a feminine figure floating in black water that is tinted red to carry the theme of fire or perhaps death. I used two or three stock images in Adobe Photoshop using blend modes to create my compositions. This scene introduces the first 3 actors; the names are in a sans serif font, and the first name fades in and drops down slowly before fading out, followed by the last name fading in and dropping down and fading out. The second and third actors names do the same and drop down, offset to appear as though they were going down stairs in hierarchy.
-This scene fades into the next scene that has a profile view of a skull holding a rose illustration on a textured backdrop, tinted in red for 3 more actors. The names are typed across one at a time in the same three tiered steps going down from the top left and fade away before the next name appears.
-In the bottom left three more names appear one at a time in scattered text dropping randomly, each one at a time and then they all scatter disperse up and fade away the film of the fire from the title Bewildered appears on the whole screen.
-A figure of a man silhouette in the woods starts to fade into the fire scene and come closer as DIRECTED BY extends out from the middle where the man is, and then sandwiches back and and disappears before Scott Mason appears as outlined strokes being drawn in to form the name and the figure gradually gets bigger and then fades away into the fire.
-The final scene is of the fire scene for a few seconds before disappearing to black, along with the music.
- I tried to time all these scene transitions and typography treatments along to the mysterious and dramatic music.
